General Thoughts

Pure Protein is like that reliable friend – not always perfect, but you can count on them. The price is the major selling point - you simply can't beat their macros at that price - but the ingredients are occasionally sketchy. Soy might sneak its way in as the main protein source, these are maltitol sweetened (not glycemic friendly), and honestly I don't wanna know what else to be concerned by on that list. These tend to be low fat, higher carb bars, with pretty consistently good, but not spectacular flavors. They are a little dense for my liking, but that's ok! Overall, it's a thumbs up from me.

Price

Pure Protein bars are a steal, usually hanging around $1 per bar at Costco or Sam's Club. A solid 15/15 for being budget-friendly.

Fullness Factor

These all generally tend to be low fiber, and at only 50g/bar, they just aren't that filling. They are at least pretty dense, so they take a while to devour. 10/15.

Flavors

Chocolate Deluxe

  • Nutrition: This bar comes in at 21g of protein with 180 calories. At only 2g of added sugar and 4g of sugar alcohols, it strikes a good balance of artifical and natural sweetners likely to offend few but perfectly suit none. The main protein sources are high quality (milk and whey), however, with the number two ingredient as hydrolyzed gelatin, amino spiking is possible. It is also low in fiber, at 2g/bar. Overall, it's hard to complain with macros like those. 32/35.
  • Taste: Though some reportedly dislike this bar, I honestly love it. It is a bit dense, but as a chocolate fanatic I have very little bad to say about this bar. 28/35.
  • Overall: 85/100.
Chewy Chocolate Chip
  • Nutrition: This bar comes in at 20g of protein with 200 calories. Similar to the chocolate deluxe, it is low sugar and has 5g of sugar alcohols. The main protein sources generally high quality, but the number one is notably soy protein isolate. Again, amino spiking is a concern. It is also low in fiber, at 2g/bar. Overall, it's definitely a step down from chocolate deluxe, but it passes the "golden rule". 25/35
  • Taste: This is definitely less dense and chewier than chocolate deluxe. I like it, but it's nothing special. 26/35
  • Overall: 76/10

Chocolate Salted Caramel

  • Nutrition: This bar comes in at 19g of protein with 200 calories, making it Pure Protein's worst. Similar to the chocolate deluxe, it is low sugar and has 5g of sugar alcohols. It is low sugar, but has a whopping 9g of sugar alcohols. It has high quality protein, but the number 1 ingredient is Maltitol. 23/35.
  • Taste: This is probably their tastiest bar. The comparison to a snickers are legit, though they are a bit dense. If you accidentally let it get too cold like me, it's very chewy, which I found slightly unpleasant. 30/35
  • Overall: 78/10

Chocolate Peanut Caramel

  • Nutrition: With 20g of protein per 190 calories, this passes the golden rule. It is exceptionally low sugar, but contains 8g of sugar alcohols. The ingredients are fairly consistent with the bars above. 29/35.
  • Taste: I think this tastes almost as good as the Salted Caramel. It is especially good when microwaved briefly. 28/35.
  • Overall: 82/10

Birthday Cake

  • Nutrition: This hits the golden rule exactly, with 20g of protein and 200 calories. It (again) is exceptionally low sugar, but contains 8g of sugar alcohols. The ingredients are fairly high quality, but the number one protein source is Soy. If you are into mostly natural ingredients however, just don't look. 24/35.
  • Taste: Many people swear by this, but I think it's nothing special. The sprinkles get everywhere and it tastes artificial. I do like the chewy texture, however. 21/35.
  • Overall: 70/10

Mint Cookie

  • Nutrition: With 19g protein / 180 cals, it's hard to complain. It is low sugar but high sugar alcohol. The protein is high quality, but the number one ingredient is Maltitol. 28/35
  • Taste: This tastes like chocolate deluxe with a mint layer on top. 21/35.
  • Overall: 74/10

Galactic Brownie

  • Nutrition: This more than passes the golden rule (20P/180Cal), and has solid ingredients, though there is again Maltitotl and Soy is the #2 protein source. 29/35
  • Taste: This tastes like the best parts of chocolate deluxe mixed with the best parts of birthday cake (texture). For some reason, I didn't have the same problem with the sprinkles getting everywhere. 30/35.
  • Overall: 84/10

Strawberry Greek Yogurt

  • Nutrition: At this point, you probably know the drill. (20P/180Cal) Spot on macros, low sugar, moderate sugar alcohol, high quality protein, artificial ingredients. 29/10.
  • Taste: I liked this as a concept, but I gotta say I would get sick of it fast. It's nice to mix in every now and again. 24/10.
  • Overall: 78/10
